Job Purpose

We need someone to support our growth, ensuring that Byte remains an enjoyable and fulfilling place to work for our team members. This person will have a key role across the lifecycle of our team, from hiring to onboarding to development and succession. This role is a strategic role as well as a tactical role, providing visionary leadership around sustaining our culture and developing our team as well as implementing the day-to-day processes to deliver it.

They will work directly with the management team to craft our approaches to supporting our people and developing their skills, and they will work directly with all of our team members to ensure they are supported and have clarity around their role in achieving our business objectives.

The People Manager will be expected to deliver:

  • Supported managers and team members: resulting in the happiness, retention and quality output of all team members
  • Process improvement: clarity around our structure and reviews process, ensuring reviews and appraisals are all delivered on time, and every team member has clear and measurable objectives
  • Diverse and talented candidates: ensuring our pipeline of candidates for open roles is filled with quality candidates who are diverse, allowing us to employ the best talent

Key Responsibilities

The role of People Manager is exciting, varied and constantly evolving. In this role, you will:

  • Continue making Byte an enjoyable and fulfilling place to work
  • Create and implement our strategy for supporting people, aligned with our business goals and crafted alongside the management team
  • Build on our existing culture, where autonomy, trust and collaboration are strong, ensuring we maintain the best aspects of our culture as we grow
  • Facilitate how our culture and values are represented across the company, how they influence the entrepreneurial (yet collaborative) behaviour and overall happiness of our team
  • Own and manage all systems and processes, working with the management team to define, deliver and develop them over time
  • Ensure our policies and processes are tip-top and support the business through its growth as well as remain efficient
  • Oversee on-boarding of new team members, ensuring they are integrated well into our ways of working
  • Own internal communications around people-based initiatives
  • Manage day-to-day employee relations, ensuring we are compliant and following best practice in how we handle all employee related matters
  • Oversee our performance review and reward process
  • Create and implement learning & development programmes so team members understand how they can progress in our business, are happy and have the tools they need for personal and professional development
  • Support managers with leading their teams and establishing great working practices with their peers
  • Assist the management team to build well-rounded teams whose skills, experience and attitudes complement each other
  • Own the off-boarding process when team members leave ensuring all exits are managed according to best practice
  • Ensure our people-management infrastructure is efficient, compliant and measurable
  • Provide insightful and actionable analytics on our team, candidates and wider talent pool to drive data-based decision making
  • Contribute to the development of future plans and strategies by offering thought leadership, supported by robust evidence to ensure that we understand our team and the wider workforce
  • Manage our recruitment process so we can acquire the very best diverse talent
  • Provide coaching and guidance across the employee lifecycle, including performance development and capability, employee engagement, employee relations, talent management and succession planning
  • Establish approaches for Byte globally, that can employed and adapted in other offices, like Byte New York

Previous Experience


  • 3+ years working in HR and people management
  • CIPD qualification
  • Understanding of the challenges of a fast scaling startup and have experience building approaches designed to nurture and maintain the positive aspects of a startup culture
  • Experiencing working with a range of roles/functions and at all levels
  • Experience developing HR strategies & tactics to support business goals
  • Experience in operations and processes of people management
  • Confident knowledge of both the traditional and more progressive sides of the HR world, able to advise on the right mix to suit our business and culture
  • Strong knowledge of HR foundational theory to complement tried and tested experience
  • Experience with building leadership and training programmes
  • Experience working at a fast-growing business of 20-200 people
  • A people person, passionately invested in helping people grow and develop
  • Experience with diversity and inclusion strategies and tactics
  • Solid understanding of UK employment law, policies and best practice
  • Experience using new and innovative technologies to deliver on strategies that build and nurture culture as well as processes and admin
  • Experience of enacting HR policies and practices, including performance reviews, performance management and policy communication
  • Experienced in developing effective and efficient recruitment strategies during high-growth periods
  • Emotionally intelligent with an ability to maintain confidentiality and act with discretion and diplomacy

  • Project management skills or experience
  • Experience of drafting and giving company communications
  • Experience using HR management software and application tracking systems for recruitment
